What picture book did you choose? What lesson did you create for it? After doing this activity, what do you see as the value in completing this assignment AND using picture books in any classroom (at any age)? How do you feel about your lesson? What did you struggle with? Be specific!

Post between Monday-Tuesday, Dec. 21st  thru Dec. 22nd and respond to each other by Wednesday, Dec. 23rd (at the latest, by Thurs. Dec. 24th)

  1. I choose to use the Dr. Suess picture book One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish. This picture book talks about different characteristics of this different fish. I choose to use this book for a lesson toward animal characteristics. After doing this activity the value of completing this assignment is being able to integrate books and use all different content area through one topic in a book. Its rewarding to see that you can still use picture books for any age and tie it into a topic in the common core they are learning about. I feel my lesson is well though out and planned through. I think it would be fun for students to hear a common picture book and put a new twist to it. I struggled with picking a picture book that would be long enough to make a full lesson out of. There are many good picture book but some were just to short to make a full content area lesson connected to. I wanted to somehow us Five Little Monkeys jumping on the bed and they only content area I could connect to is math somehow tying in a 30-50 minutes lesson out of it.

    1. I like your statement "Its rewarding to see that you can still use picture books for any age and tie it into a topic in the common core they are learning about." This is very true and I have found when substituting that students of all ages love to be read to. It is nice to see this and I hope this continues as the years and technology increase. I still find myself loving to read these children books when I am asked to do an assignment for them. I think several books can tie into lessons its just hard to find the right one for the right lesson!

    2. I agree with you about it being fun for students to use a common book and put a new twist to it. I think your students will have fun with this assignment. My daughter is a marine biology major so I was thinking of her the whole time I was reading your lesson plan! I have helped her study of the different categories of species of animals, corals, etc so I believe that is why she was coming to mind while I was reading your plan of having the students match and categorize animals. Your lesson plan did provide a lot of variety for all the students. In the future when they read the book (even as adults) they will always remember the lesson and then that will take them to another level of thinking.

  3. I chose the picture book Caps for Sale. I created a lesson for mathematics and creating different combinations with blocks. The value in completing this assignment that I got out of it was that you can use reading books for any subject. It was neat that I was using a book in order to teach a math lesson. I think students will definitely benefit from reading a book first before doing a lesson about the book because it will give them a chance to link the lesson to real life events that may be happening in the book. This will make that connection for them. I feel like my lesson is very teachable and has a great example book to go with it. I found it very difficult to start this lesson plan which is always something I struggle with. It seems like I can never find the perfect start but once I do everything seems to fall into place afterwards.

    1. I liked how you pointed out the value of being about to use books for any subject matter. It is a great motivation to use to start lessons and get the students engaged. I also like how you found that students will make the connection. I think it is important to help students start making connections on everything they learn so they gain a deep understanding of the material.

    2. I really like how you believe this will allow students to link the assignment to real life events. I believe more teachers can do that then it helps critical thinking develop and application of knowledge. It doesn't do any good for people to learn things and not be able to apply the principles. I agree with you and believe the students will be able to link this to real life events. Also they will be able to apply this to assignments as they get older and advance in school.

  4. I chose "The Poky Little Puppy" as my book for the lesson in my Computer Applications. The objective of this is two fold. One is to learn how quickly and easily it is to apply a formula in Excel rather than doing the data collection and calculations by hand. Also, the students should be able to relate to staying on task and getting assignments done as they should rather than putting over or extending the assignments and having to catch up. The value of using picture books in this class would be beneficial. Even though the high school kids try to act so "mature" at times, they actually enjoy any activities I have done that resemble activities they have done in grade school. I had them lower their heads and raise their thumbs (like in heads up, 7 up) if they were done with an assignment. They all begged to play the game! So I would think they would really enjoy the assignment with the picture book. I struggled with IEP plans. My students with plans require additional time for assignment completion. Some of them are challenged with the use of a computer so it actually takes them longer to do assignments on the computer than by hand . This poses a challenge with trying to achieve the learning objectives,

    1. I loved your idea of heads up, 7 up. I remember playing it in highschool and I thought it was the best. There would be days our teachers would say put your head down when you finish an assignment which was a perfect little nap time to rest while you waited on others to finish. I also really enjoyed your book. I remember reading this book with my mom as a child. The golden books were my favorite.

    2. I agree with the fact that students still love to do activities that would be considered fun for younger children and play old games. Anytime I substitute I give the incentive that if the students work quietly and finish all of their work then we will play a game such as heads up seven up or I will allow them to doodle quietly. This always seems to work because this is something fun that students rarely get to do.
