I thought the text set collection was challenging in that I found myself duplicating the content specifics too much. I had to revise my list a few times. Also I tended to lean towards text that was more my reading and knowledge level. I really had to remind myself to choose selections of easier levels as discussed in Tovani's book. With that though it was difficult to find mid level texts. I could find elementary level and higher level texts but struggled to find a lot of mid ground formats. I felt constructing the lesson plans went well with having the text list in place. It seemed easier to formulate lessons and especially to be more creative when building it around a list of texts. If doing over again, I would narrow my lesson topic more. I think mine was broad and that is what made it a challenge to complete the text list. This lesson has really helped me in thinking of the types of supporting documents to provide my students. I was looking at it all from my perspective. I like to read and read challenging texts and am a quicker reader, so I was compiling lists according to those standards. Also I have been struggling with how to help IEP students. These assignments have helped me think outside the box and from varying perspectives to find material to aid my students.
ReplyDeleteI defiantly agree with the text set collection being challenging. I also struggled finding information that was at the 1st grade level. Instead I was finding more texts for the teachers. I also agree with the lessons going well because we had or text already picked out. It was easy to figure out which piece to use for each lesson however I kept revising my lessons because I would get a better idea. I think this was a great assignment in preparing us for the real classroom setting and how to connect information.
DeleteI think having a more narrow topic would have helped you only because I did a very narrow topic and it was much easier to find text sets that could go with it. It still took me a very long time to find all fifteen text sets but once I did it was a relief!! Now we just have to get through one more project and we are DONE! :) ..... and then back to school next week :O
DeleteMy text set collection went great (after I was done). I feel like it was very challenging! Once I understood what to do it went a little better. I have found that this class would have been a lot easier to comprehend the assignments if I would have taken it in class. But we have one week left so I think I can make it! I think making my PowerPoint was the part that went well. Creating my lessons was hard to get started because you had to specifically make it vocab, writing and reading but once I was about halfway through it came together. If I had to change something I would have changed the grade level I did. It seems like living and non-living things went better with the older grades. I believe this has helped me view the idea of texts in various content areas because now I understand better on how to imply these different texts with all of the different class subjects. It will be easier for me when I am in my own classroom and need to find texts to go with certain assignments.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more that this course would be much easier to take it in class rather then online. Overall the assignment was challenging but really rewarding in the end. I agree that I would change the grade level I chose also. Once I started the assignment and truly understood what was expected and what I need to do I wanted to change my grade and topic area. I believe this kind of text set however will make it easier when I get into a real classroom.
DeleteI agree that the compiling of the text set collection was the most challenging piece of this assignment. The lesson plans were difficult for me to get started but it seems as though once I got going it went smoothly. Yes we are on the downhill slide so I think you will make it through great! I also understand completely about once you have your own classroom then you can implement and construct these easier. Although this is my first year teaching, I am teaching a few classes that other teachers are the primary teachers of so I feel I need to confirm with their lesson planning so we all are on the same path. Once I have the content area completely to myself then I feel I will have more creative freedom. However I have learned a lot in this class that I can implement in the flexibility that I do have and also with individual students.
DeleteMy Content text set collection was defiantly challenging. I choose to focus on first grade math. I struggled at first because I was finding more articles and texts that were more focused toward the teachers then the students. Many of the text I chose even in the end I believe are still little over the student’s heads. I think I was about to tie materials to first grade math that normal wouldn’t connect. Such as a book called Close, Closer, Closest. I tied this book to first grade math by using distance. I overall believe my lessons were done well. I changed my lessons a few times because I would revise it and then still thought there was something missing. In the end I feel the lessons are well organized and well thought out. I believe this assignment was defiantly challenging however I believed it opened my views on texts for content areas. I was able to connect materials in different ways that normally I wouldn’t have thought about.
ReplyDeleteI too found that my texts sets might be a little difficult for my grade level. However I think as long as I explained it very well, then they would understand where I was coming from. The challenge might be good for them!
DeleteI am reassured that we all were challenged with the text set collection as I thought it was just me that was having the difficulty. I too found myself revising several times. This lesson really provoked a lot of deep thought. I can imagine finding the text for 1st grade math would be hard! My lesson was targeting 9-12 grades and I was challenged to keep text on their level or easier.
